Words by Chris Rees 17.2.2011

Congratulations to, Will John who is one of Squash Wales’ finest under 19 players and has finally triumphed by taking the title in an age group which has many talented performers. Will is based in Raquets Thame and this season has joined the PSA circuit. Jordan, aged only 16, had beaten the number 1 seed Sam Fenwick 8/11 11/6 9/11 11/3 11/5 in the other semi-final, Sam and Nyall played an energy sapping 3-4 match which lasted over an hour. Nyall won 11/6 in the fifth game.

Will gave a great speech at the presentation in which he thanked Chris Rees and Greg Tippings for running the event, Newport for hosting the venue, the players for their efforts and the parents for supporting their young stars.

The standard of squash did not diminish in any age group and is a reflection of the hard work and excellence of the Squash Wales Junior Development Structure. The best of Wales’ juniors turned up to display their racket skills in this tournament that is compulsory for those who want to represent their country.

Srikar Mummidi, Carmarthen, beat Kieran Hillman, Newport, 11/7 11/7 14/12 in the under 11 Boys Final. Kate Workman, Llantrisant beat Eleri Rowlands, Llanelli, 9/11 11/7 10/12 11/3 11/4 in an action packed under 11 Girls Final.

Liam Eason, Newport, beat Elliot Morris, Cardiff in a hard hitting boys under 13 final 8/11 11/7 11/9 11/8. Tyra Beattie, Saints beat Ciara Richards, Aberdare in three straight games in the girls under 13 final.

The boys under 15 final lasted a thrilling five games where the advantage switched with virtually every point and the supporters of Emyr Evans, Saints and Callum Davidson, Tewksbury, wore themselves out watching the many long skilful rallies which made up every game. Callum won 11/5 in the fifth game. Lowri Roberts, Llanrwst, dominated the girls under 15 event and beat Sophie Alderman, Rhiwbina, in the final and Lowri didn’t concede a game all weekend.

The number 1 seed Joel Makin, Aberdare, withdrew due to injury at the eleventh hour and James Thomson took advantage beating Owain Taylor, Lexton, 11/7 in the fifth game to take the boys under 17 trophy. Jenny Haley, Newport, beat Sasha Cocks, St. Mellons in another tremendously competitive five setter final to win the under 17 girls event. Tesni Evans, Saints, has been unbeatable in Squash Wales tournaments since she took up the sport as an infant. Tesni beat Hannah Davies from Wrexham in a hard fought match.

Quote From Mike Workman – The snow in December prevented this event from taking place and we were concerned that many juniors would miss the much needed competition  however our junior players have been busy working hard in Squash Wales ‘back to basics’ coaching programmes and this was evident for all to see by the quality of squash displayed this weekend. We now look forward to the North Wales Jnr Open in 2 weeks.
